Artist Statement

I created this body of work in response to the Mozart String Quartet in F Major KV 590.
The music is filled with a constancy of imitations, calls and echoes; it provokes a light feeling and a quickening of pace, all followed by slower moments of solitude, which I feel was represented in my process. I expressed the vibrancy and upbeat tempo of the music through the color palette that I chose and the rhythm by which I applied paint to the canvas. The motion of my process was itself an expressive act, evocative of the music’s movement which worked to create the depth and translucent feeling of the work.
I applied paint to canvas in a methodical way, mapping and planning where to place colors and figures. The slower part of the process reflects the music, where planned creation becomes subject to quick and immediate change. Although interconnected and echoed in the livening tempo and speed, the slow periods are unique as they encapsulate moments of peace and reflection in between the active motions. The day is a representation that mirrors these themes in an idyllic manner. These three paintings depict figures in motion throughout the course of a day, when rising in the morning, finding restoration in the evening, and moments of reflection in between.
